I was once asked by a client just before Christmas if I’d like some London pride to take home – “Yes please, I like that beer… ah, you mean some London Pride for my garden!” A slight disappointment, but it’s actually one of my favourite forms of ground cover.
You can split the plant and root the individual rosettes in Springtime. The evergreen foliage spreads quickly to completely cover the soil, preventing pesky weeds. The pretty pink, dainty flowers grow in early summer, rising to around a foot in height.
London Pride also looks great in pots on a balcony or terrace and provides year-round interest. In season, you can sometimes find the plant at Waitrose, Harrogate but otherwise any good garden centre should stock them, including Harrogate Council Nursery on Harlow Moor Road.
