How to Cut the Top of a Hedge Straight & Level
The key to success is getting up high enough to cut at waist to chest level
Cutting to top of a hedge straight and level can seem like a difficult job, especially if you only cut your hedge once or twice a year. There are many tips and techniques available online from tying string lines between two canes, using a plank of wood or even cutting a cardboard template!
However, there is a simple way to get a straight line along the top of your hedge – you simply need to get high enough above it before cutting. When you have the trimming tool at waist to chest height, you can lock your shoulders and elbows into your body and twist left to right in order to keep the blades level.
Check the level as you move along the hedge
As you move the ladder along the hedge, take the level from the section that you’ve already cut and make your way along the line. As long as you’re standing on the same rungs of the ladder each time, you should end up with a nice straight line along the top of your hedge. Check your work as you go by viewing the hedge from a distance each time you move the ladder. No need for complicated trimming techniques!
What equipment do you need to cut the top of a hedge level?
Yourself, a hedge-cutting tool and a tripod ladder – that’s it… no need for string lines, measuring sticks or spirit levels!
