How to Split Your Own Kindling Wood
The fastest way to split kindling is to use an old car tyre.
Purchasing kindling wood for your log burner can be expensive, especially if you rely on the netted bags from your local garage forecourt! So why not spit your own using the supply of logs you already have?
When you get your next delivery of firewood, keep the smallest pieces to one side. Or if you have access to woodland to collect your own timber, branch-wood is ideal for kindling.
Use an old car tyre
The fastest way to split a batch of kindling wood is to use an old car tyre. Wedge as many small logs inside the tyre then just use your splitting maul or axe to give them all a good whack. Lift the tyre up or pull out the sticks and you have a pile of kindling!
Choosing a splitting axe
I’ve tried many axes over the years, from heavy splitting mauls to razor-sharp carving axes. For splitting firewood and kindling, I can highly recommend on the Fiskars X-Series Axes which are available in a range of sizes to suit your height. Available at J Todd & Son in Summerbridge or B&Q on Skipton Road.
Storing Kindling Wood
If the wood that you split was freshly felled wet or green wood, then it needs to dry out. The good news is that it won’t take long at all if you’ve split it into small pieces for kindling. It’s important to store it under cover but with maximum airflow. A box made of old pallets is ideal.
